Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms. Sherry Rehman said that the coalition decision to impeach the President was a constitutional move and the whole process would be carried out according to the procedure laid down in the constitution.
Talking to the media the Minister said the government had no intention nor it had any need to indulge in any horse trading. The government firmly believes in operating constitutionally, she said. “We have no need to buy opposition MNAs for impeachment. We will stay within the ambit of the Constitution in our historic battle for the supremacy of Parliament,” she said. Answering a question, Ms Rehman said that the coalition government enjoys the support of 350 legislators and the number is growing by the hour. “An overwhelming majority including opposition members support our stand that the Parliament has the right to take such a decision. They have assured the government of their unqualified support for the impeachment move.” Ms Rehman clarified that floor crossing clause will not apply on those opposition legislators who vote in favour of the impeachment motion. “We are aware that many MNAs and Senators are being pressurized to refrain from voting. Generous bribes are being offered with the money earned through eight years of massive corruption. Their decision to opt against the move will not affect us in any way as we have the required numerical strength in both the houses. But this is an opportunity for all political forces to stand up for democracy and a representative, pro-people order.” The Minister said that the ruling coalition’s impeachment decision has received wide support from the nation. “The results of the February 18 elections symbolized a clear rejection for the government and policies of Mr Musharraf. People voted for a parliamentary system where their elected representatives are responsible for running the country.” Responding to a question, Ms Rehman said PPPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim will surely cast his vote in favour of the impeachment motion. She also said that anyone who even thinks of using 58 (2-b) will only be thinking of personal benefit, not the stability and survival of Pakistan. Ms Rehman said that there is an elected government in place in the country and it has the right to have the freedom to resolve multiple crises confronting the country. “The impeachment process is a step towards eliminating the hurdles that have been obstructing our efforts to empower the parliament and focus on progress and prosperity of the country. We never wanted to opt for confrontation, but as elected representatives we are obliged to implement the mandate given to us on February 18.
