Scores of people have been killed by floods unleashed by torrential rains across the countryin Khyber Paktunkhwa and tribal areas.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is severely hit by the heavy rains where 30 people have died so far in swat and Shangla area. Our correspondent reports that seventy people were killed Pattan Tehsil of Kohistan while ten died in Dasu. Addressing a news conference, provincial minister for information, Mian Iftikhar Hussain said at least sixty people have lost their lives due to rain related incidents. He said four hundred thousand people are Stranded in different parts of the province. The floodwaters damaged crops and disrupted road traffic in Swat, Shangla, Kalam and Bunir. In Charsadda, two children died in a building collapse while 10 people including women were swept away by flood water. An old bridge at university road in Kohat also collapsed where rescuers found 15 people under the debris. In Peshawar, as many as 35 mud houses caved in killing eight people. Four died in Karak district. Karakoram highway is also reported to be blocked at several places due to landsliding. Emergency has been declared in the province. President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his concern and grief over the large number of deaths in heavy rains and asked the authorities for immediate relief and rehabilitation measures. He also directed the national disaster management authority for an urgent review of the situation and remedial measures without any delay. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani talked to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,Amir Haider Khan Hoti by phone and expressed his grief over the loss of life and property. The Prime Minister instructed the Chairman NDMA to provide relief to the affected people in coordination with provincial government. The Prime Minister also rang up Chairman CDA and expressed concern over choked drainage system in different parts of the federal capital.
